Peckham Rye Station Set for Major Congestion-Busting Upgrade
Passengers using Peckham Rye railway station are set to benefit from a major package of upgrades aimed at reducing congestion and improving passenger flow at one of south London’s busiest interchange stations.
The improvement programme, being delivered by Network Rail and Southern, will open up a long-hidden section of the station’s booking hall for the first time in around 30 years, creating additional space for passengers as usage continues to grow.
As part of the changes, the station’s main ticket vending machine will be relocated into the newly reopened area, which previously housed cash machines. Railway officials say the move will ease crowding in the booking hall and help prepare the station for further upgrades over the next year, including extra entrance doors and additional ticket gates.
Work is also due to begin in June on foundations for a future replica of the station’s historic canopy, which was removed in 1961. The project is being coordinated ahead of separate public square improvements planned outside the station by Southwark Council.
Passengers will also see new information screens installed further along platforms 1 and 2 this summer. The screens are intended to encourage passengers to spread out more evenly along the platforms, helping reduce overcrowding both on the station and aboard trains.
Further work planned for next year includes widening narrow sections of platforms 3 and 4 and refurbishing platform canopies to improve the overall waiting environment.
Andrew Wood, senior commercial scheme sponsor for Network Rail, said:
“These improvements at Peckham Rye will make a real difference for passengers, creating more space, easing congestion and making it quicker and easier to move through the station. This is an important first step in preparing the station for future growth while also enhancing the environment for the thousands of people who use it every day. I’d like to thank passengers for their patience while we carry out this work.”
Andy Piper, railway head of Gatwick and London stations at Govia Thameslink Railway, said:
“I’m looking forward to seeing these improvements at Peckham Rye take shape. We’ve heard from our customers just how much of a difference these changes will make, bringing huge benefits through making the station easier to travel through and with less congestion.”
