Wembley Travel Warning as Rail Disruption Hits Cup Final Weekend
Rail passengers heading to Wembley Stadium for a major weekend of sporting events are being urged to plan ahead due to significant railway disruption and engineering work.
The busy weekend will see the Rugby League Challenge Cup final take place on Saturday 30 May, followed by the Women’s FA Cup final between Brighton & Hove Albion W.F.C. and Manchester City W.F.C. on Sunday 31 May.
At the same time, Network Rail engineers will be carrying out major drainage upgrades on sections of the West Coast Main Line near Milton Keynes, while additional work linked to HS2 will also be taking place near London Euston station.
Although trains will continue running into Euston during the works, services will operate at a reduced level throughout the weekend. In addition, Wembley Stadium railway station will be closed on both 30 and 31 May.
Passengers are also being warned that the London Overground Lioness line will not operate over the same weekend due to essential maintenance work.
To help ease pressure on routes into the capital, Chiltern Railways says it will provide more than 10,000 additional seats each day by operating extra services between the West Midlands and London Marylebone station via the Chiltern Main Line.
Gary Walsh, West Coast South route director for Network Rail, said:
“Over the last weekend of May we will be completing vital upgrades to drainage on the West Coast Main Line, which will help trains to continue running smoothly and with reduced disruption in future. We appreciate there is never a good time to disrupt the railway, and we would like to thank passengers for their patience while this work was taking place.”
