Revised Plans Submitted for Scarborough Station Gateway Project
New plans have been submitted to redevelop the area surrounding Scarborough train station, aiming to create a more inviting public space for both residents and visitors. The revised proposals, part of the Station Gateway project, focus on improving access to public transport while enhancing the overall environment around the station.
The first phase of the scheme includes proposals for new outdoor seating, resurfaced footpaths, tree planting, upgraded accessible parking, and better pedestrian links to the station and nearby transport connections. The designs have been refined following input from North Yorkshire Council, the Scarborough Neighbourhood Board, and other stakeholders, with a particular emphasis on the area directly in front of the station.
Initial plans for the project were developed by Scarborough Borough Council and submitted in 2022, prior to the creation of North Yorkshire Council in April 2023. The updated proposals are set to be considered by the council’s planning department and would be funded through the £6.68 million allocation from the Government’s Local Regeneration Fund. The redevelopment is intended to act as a catalyst for further investment, encouraging wider regeneration in the town.
Cllr Mark Crane, North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for open to business, said:
“This has been a long-running project that started under the former borough council and has been progressed by this authority. The ambition is to use this funding to improve the area around the railway station, creating a more attractive and welcoming entry into Scarborough for residents and visitors. It is hoped that this regeneration can then inspire future investment in the town, ensuring that Scarborough remains a vibrant place to live, work and visit. The revised plans have been submitted and they will now be carefully considered and rigorously scrutinised as part of our usual planning process.”
