Train services to St Ives in Cornwall have resumed this morning following the completion of planned engineering work by Network Rail on the branch line.

The route from St Erth had been closed for two weeks while teams carried out extensive upgrades designed to improve safety and long-term reliability. Work was focused on replacing life-expired infrastructure along the line.

Engineers worked continuously during the closure to install 2,140 yards of new rail, alongside fresh sleepers and ballast, renewing sections of track that had reached the end of their serviceable life. The improvements form part of wider efforts to futureproof the popular branch.

The reopening also coincides with the full opening of a new footbridge with lifts at St Erth station, improving accessibility. With the upgraded track and station facilities now in place, the line is expected to continue catering for strong demand, with more than 750,000 passengers travelling on the route each year to destinations including Carbis Bay and St Ives, alongside the River Hayle.

Stuart Stevens, Network Rail project manager, said:

“This stretch of railway is vital for the local community and the thousands of visitors who come to the St Ives area every year. A reliable train services makes travelling much easier, takes thousands of cars off the local roads and provides a boost to the local economy.”

Lee Goodson, GWR station manager for West Cornwall, said:

“Continuing to invest in the railway, we are pleased this work has been completed on time and on budget, ensuring the continued use of this vital rail link for years to come.”
