The start of tunnelling on HS2 beneath central London has been welcomed by the rail union representing staff working directly on the high-speed project.

TSSA said the launch of tunnelling between Old Oak Common and Euston marked an important step for HS2, describing it as a significant moment for the future of the scheme. The milestone follows the formal activation of a tunnel boring machine at the Old Oak Common construction site in west London.

The machine was officially switched on on Tuesday 27th, signalling the beginning of work to drive tunnels towards Euston station. The section is seen as a key part of delivering HS2’s planned London terminus and advancing construction within the capital.

TSSA General Secretary Maryam Eslamdoust said the development demonstrated progress, but warned that wider questions about the project’s scope and delivery remain unresolved.

Commenting, TSSA General Secretary, Maryam Eslamdoust said:

“Clearly the fact we are now seeing the start of tunnelling across London into Euston station is a vital move forwards for HS2. HS2 will be the main driver of local, regional and national economies and the only means of mass transport able to combat climate change. However, we have long made the case that HS2, far from being scaled back, should have been built all the way to Scotland. In truth we need further clarity about the timetable of delivery for what is planned at present and will be asking Ministers to provide more detail as soon as possible.”

The union has consistently argued that HS2 should be expanded rather than reduced, and says the government must now provide clearer timescales for the remaining elements of the project as work continues in London.
