TfW marks milestone as Pay As You Go hits 1.5 million journeys
More than 1.5 million pay as you go rail journeys have now been made on Transport for Wales (TfW) routes across south Wales. The tap on, tap off technology, launched in November 2024, has quickly become TfW’s fastest-selling rail product.
TfW became the first train operator outside of London and the South East to introduce the contactless payment system, positioning itself as a leader in the UK rail industry. Currently available across 95 stations, the scheme forms part of the South Wales Metro project and ensures customers automatically receive the best value fare for their journeys.
The company is investing £800 million in brand-new trains across the Wales and Borders network, with the Pay As You Go ticketing system set to expand to Network North Wales next year. Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, Ken Skates, said he was pleased to see so many passengers benefiting from the system, describing it as “quick, simple and cost-effective.”
TfW’s Chief Commercial Officer, Alexia Course, added: “With over 1.5 million journeys made, Pay As You Go is our fastest growing rail product and we’re really excited to be expanding into Network North Wales next year. Tap on, tap off ticketing, alongside our new trains, is having a positive impact on both our customers and our revenue.”
