Two New HS2 Bridges Open in Warwickshire, Boosting Local Connectivity
Two new bridges have officially opened near Leamington Spa, marking a key milestone in the construction of HS2. The Fosse Way bridge now carries the B4455 over the new high-speed railway near the village of Offchurch, following the historic route of a Roman road between Exeter and Lincoln. Nearby, the Offchurch Greenway bridge carries a popular walking and cycling path between Leamington and Rugby, along the route of a former railway line.
Both bridges were built by Galldris on behalf of HS2’s main works contractor Balfour Beatty VINCI. The Fosse Way bridge measures 78 metres in length and 14 metres in width, providing enough space for both vehicles and pedestrians, while the Greenway bridge is 68 metres long and 22 metres wide, with grass verges on either side to encourage wildlife crossings. Their completion allows HS2’s contractors to begin demolishing the old section of road to make way for the railway cutting below.
Vicki Lee, HS2 Ltd’s Senior Project Manager, said: “It’s great to see the Fosse Way and Offchurch Greenway bridges open to the public within a few days of each other. These bridges may be relatively small, but they play a vital role in keeping communities connected and I’d like to thank everyone who worked so hard over the last few years to get them open to the public.” A further bridge will be constructed next year to separate cyclists and walkers from passing traffic at the B4455 crossing.
John McNiffe, Project Director for Balfour Beatty VINCI, said: “The recent completion of the Fosse Way and Offchurch Greenway bridges is the latest example of how we’re helping to deliver the HS2 project in Warwickshire. It’s great news for the local community, who will benefit from increased connectivity in the area. We’d like to thank everyone for their continued patience and understanding as we continue to deliver this exciting construction programme.” These latest openings bring the total number of major bridges completed in the area in 2025 to four, contributing to the 200-plus structures being built along the HS2 route.
