Cable Theft Shuts Northumberland Line With Major Disruption

Theft of signalling cables between Newcastle railway station and Ashington railway station has forced the closure of the line, bringing significant disruption to services across the route.

Train services between the two stations are currently unable to operate as normal, with journeys either cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes or diverted via Morpeth railway station. The disruption is expected to continue for the rest of the day.

Services are particularly affected between Northumberland Park and Seaton Delaval, where trains are unable to run in either direction. As a result, wider routes between Newcastle and Ashington are also impacted.

Northern has confirmed that ticket restrictions, including Advance and Peak limitations, have been lifted in the affected area for the duration of the disruption. These will be reinstated once services return to normal.

Rail replacement transport has been requested to operate between Newcastle and Ashington to assist passengers while the line remains closed.

Passengers are advised to check before travelling and allow extra time for their journeys.
