Huddersfield railway station is taking centre stage on television as it appears in the opening episode of a new More4 series celebrating Britain’s most distinctive railway buildings. Britain’s Favourite Railway Stations shines a spotlight on the station’s history, architecture and continued importance to the town it serves.

Operated by TransPennine Express, Huddersfield station is portrayed in the programme as a building that feels closer to a stately home than a conventional transport hub. The episode explores its imposing neoclassical frontage, architectural significance and the way it has become woven into Huddersfield’s identity over generations.

The programme is presented by architect Damion Burrows, who leads viewers through the station’s story, past and present, and reflects on why it remains such a powerful landmark.

“This is more than a station,” he says in the episode. “It’s grand, imposing, it’s making a statement.”

Viewers are also given access behind the scenes of the station’s £70 million redevelopment, which is currently under way as part of the TransPennine Route Upgrade. The project aims to safeguard the station’s historic fabric while delivering modern facilities fit for future generations of passengers.

The TransPennine Route Upgrade is a multi-billion-pound programme designed to transform rail travel across the Pennines, improving services between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York. At Huddersfield, the work focuses on balancing sensitive restoration with practical upgrades for a busy modern railway.

The series highlights the care being taken to retain the station’s original character, from its sweeping colonnades to its decorative interior features, while adapting the building to meet contemporary passenger expectations.

Scott Goddard, Area Customer Experience Manager at Huddersfield station, said:

“It’s fantastic to see Huddersfield take centre stage and we’re proud of the work going on to preserve the station’s unique history while creating a better experience for everyone who uses it. TRU will bring better journeys to passengers travelling across the Pennines between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.”

Britain’s Favourite Railway Stations is available to watch on More4, with Huddersfield railway station featured in the first episode of the new series.
