More than a dozen passengers were treated for injuries after a collision involving two NJ Transit trains led to a derailment in Montclair, New Jersey, on Friday evening.

The incident occurred shortly after 6:45pm on the Montclair–Boonton Line, close to Bay Street station. NJ Transit confirmed that two trains came into contact, causing a single carriage to leave the tracks.

Emergency services attended the scene and 17 people were reported to have sustained injuries, all of which were described as non-life-threatening. NJ Transit later confirmed that six of the injured were crew members, these were later released from hospital.

The circumstances leading up to the collision have not yet been established. NJ Transit said its police department is leading the investigation, with the National Transportation Safety Board also set to examine the incident.

An NJ Transit spokesperson said:

"Our primary focus during this incident is the safety of our passengers, our employees and our first responders."

As the investigation got under way, NJ Transit suspended rail services on the Montclair–Boonton Line in both directions late into Friday night. Passengers were advised that rail tickets and passes would be accepted on NJ Transit bus services while the disruption continued. NJ Transit then confirmed that services were operating again on Saturday (20th) morning but there may still be delays as the area is cleared.
