TransPennine Express to launch overnight trains to Manchester Airport

Passengers travelling through Manchester are set to benefit from enhanced rail connectivity, as TransPennine Express prepares to introduce a new timetable next month.

From Sunday 17 May, the operator will roll out updated schedules as part of the wider national timetable change. A key feature of the update will be the introduction of overnight services between Manchester Piccadilly railway station and Manchester Airport railway station, creating a near-hourly service running around the clock.

The addition of eight new trains is designed to improve access for passengers travelling at unsociable hours, particularly those catching early flights or arriving late at one of the UK’s busiest airports.

Further changes will also see an extra weekday stop introduced at Dewsbury railway station on the 08.05 Leeds to Manchester Piccadilly service. The new call is expected to benefit commuters and students heading into Manchester during the morning peak.

Looking ahead to the summer, the operator has also confirmed plans to boost services during the Edinburgh Fringe. Two additional trains per day will run from Monday 3 August until Friday 4 September, helping festivalgoers return home after evening performances alongside the regular timetable.

Andrew McClements, Customer Experience & Transformation Director at TransPennine Express, said:

“Although most of our services are unchanged, we encourage customers to take a moment to check any journeys they make regularly. We’re pleased to be introducing services that give customers more choice, added flexibility, and an improved overall experience when travelling with us.”
