Investigation launched after body found near railway tracks in Newtown

Police are investigating after a body was discovered close to railway lines in Newtown on Wednesday afternoon.

British Transport Police confirmed officers were called to the area at around 2.45pm on February 4 after reports of a casualty near the tracks. Emergency services attended the scene, but the individual was pronounced dead.

The incident led to disruption on the rail network, with services between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth cancelled during Wednesday afternoon. National Rail later advised passengers that disruption was expected to continue until around 7pm.

Officers remain at an early stage of enquiries as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

A spokesperson from the BTP said:

"Officers were called to a report of a casualty near the tracks at 2.45pm today in Newtown. Officers and paramedics attended and sadly a person was pronounced deceased. An investigation into the incident is ongoing."
