Overhead Wire And Signalling Issues Cause Major Rail Disruption Between Durham And Darlington

Passengers travelling on the East Coast Main Line are facing disruption after overhead wire damage caused a signalling fault between Durham and Darlington.

Although lines have now reopened, the fault meant some lines werey blocked, with services through the affected section subject to cancellations, delays of up to 30 minutes or revised schedules.

Network Rail engineers attended the site to assess the problem and carry out repairs.

The disruption is affecting the following operators and routes:

  • CrossCountry between Glasgow Central and Plymouth, between Edinburgh and Birmingham New Street / Bristol Temple Meads / Plymouth, and also between Newcastle and Birmingham New Street / Reading

  • LNER between Aberdeen / Edinburgh / Newcastle and London Kings Cross

  • Lumo between Glasgow Queen Street / Edinburgh and London Kings Cross

  • TransPennine Express between Newcastle and York

Ticket acceptance has been arranged on CrossCountry, LNER and Lumo. Please note that any ticket acceptance or alternative arrangements can be withdrawn at short notice. Always check with your operator before travelling.

Rail replacement transport has also has been requested between Newcastle and York in both directions.

Passengers using the route are being advised to check their journeys before travelling and allow extra time where necessary.

Although the incident itself has been resolved, residual disruption is currently expected to continue until the end of the day.
