Police have confirmed that a person died on the railway in South Cheshire on Thursday morning, triggering the closure of several key routes and widespread disruption to train services.

Earlier in the day, National Rail reported that emergency services were responding to an incident on the tracks between Crewe, Runcorn and Warrington Bank Quay. To allow police and paramedics to work safely, all lines in the area were temporarily closed, with passengers warned to expect major disruption through the morning.

British Transport Police later confirmed officers were dealing with a casualty on the railway in the Coppenhall area of Crewe. The incident was reported at around 8.20am, prompting an emergency response.

A BTP spokesperson said:

“Officers and paramedics attended and sadly a person was pronounced deceased. The incident is not thought to be suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

As a result of the incident, services operated by Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway between Crewe, Runcorn and Warrington Bank Quay were cancelled, delayed or diverted. Rail operators have since confirmed that all lines have now reopened and services are resuming.

The incident follows separate tragic news on Wednesday afternoon, when a person was found dead on the railway tracks at Hartford station.
