Tesla Crashes Into Train Station, Killing Person Waiting to Board
A fatal incident brought light-rail services to a halt in Folsom on Thursday after a car crashed into a station platform, killing a person who had been waiting for a train.
The collision occurred shortly before 3 p.m. on January 22 at Iron Point Station, close to an outlet shopping centre alongside Highway 50, according to the Sacramento Regional Transit District. A Tesla left Iron Point Road, struck a tree on the edge of the mall’s car park and then travelled roughly 200 feet across the lot before slamming into the elevated boarding area.
Emergency officials said the vehicle hit a person standing on the platform before overturning a safety railing and coming to rest on the tracks below. The individual struck at the station was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, who was the only person inside the car, managed to exit the vehicle without assistance. She was transported to hospital, although authorities did not release any details about her condition.
Images from the scene showed the Tesla resting nose-first on the railway line, heavily damaged at the front with at least one wheel missing. The rear of the vehicle was left balanced against the metal railing of the platform, which stands around three feet high.
As a result of the crash, services on a seven-mile section of the SacRT Gold Line were suspended for several hours. Trains did not resume running until about 8 p.m. while investigators examined the scene and engineers carried out safety checks on the track infrastructure.
