Women Targeted on Packed Edinburgh Train as Sex Offender Jailed

A man who sexually assaulted two women on a packed train travelling through Fife has been jailed following an investigation by British Transport Police.

Jamie Muir, 33, of James Street in Dunfermline, was sentenced at Dunfermline Sheriff Court on Wednesday 29 April to nine months in prison. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register after previously admitting two counts of sexual assault.

The court heard that the offences took place on Sunday 16 November 2025 on a busy train travelling from Inverkeithing railway station to Edinburgh Waverley railway station ahead of the Scotland v Argentina rugby international at Murrayfield Stadium.

Muir stood behind two women in the crowded carriage and began sexually assaulting them shortly after the train departed Inverkeithing, using the packed conditions to conceal his actions.

One of the victims confronted him during the journey, with Muir apologising and claiming he did not know where he was. Fellow passengers then intervened and encouraged him to leave the service at the next stop, with Muir exiting the train at North Queensferry railway station.

After arriving at Edinburgh Waverley, the women reported the incident to police officers, triggering an urgent investigation. Images of Muir were circulated among police forces before he was identified and arrested.

Police said that when questioned, Muir attempted to excuse his behaviour by claiming he had been feeling unwell.

Crawford Gillies, Detective Constable at British Transport Police, said:

"Muir's actions were opportunistic and sickening, so I'm very pleased with the sentence handed down to him that should provide him ample time to consider his actions. There is absolutely no place for this type of behaviour anywhere on the railway network, and we take every report of this kind of behaviour seriously. If you ever need us while you're travelling on the railway, you can discreetly text us on 61016. Our officers can meet the train at the next station, and we’ll stop at nothing to bring sexual offenders to justice.”
