Leeds hotel attacker jailed after savage assault leaves woman seriously injured

A man has been sentenced to more than five years in prison after carrying out a brutal assault on a woman at a hotel in Leeds, following an investigation by the British Transport Police.

Lee Chadbourne, 38, of Huntingdon Road in Doncaster, admitted charges of Grievous Bodily Harm and perverting the course of justice. He appeared at Leeds Crown Court on 23 April, where he was handed a prison sentence of five years and three months. A restraining order was also imposed, preventing him from making any contact with the victim.

The court was told the attack took place on Saturday 30 August last year. During the incident, Chadbourne picked up a wine bottle and swung it towards the woman’s head before launching a prolonged and violent assault. He repeatedly struck her across the head, neck and body, before kicking her in the head, causing a serious injury to the back of her eye which later required laser treatment.

After the attack, Chadbourne left the scene while the injured woman managed to reach the hotel reception. Staff were alerted to the situation when she arrived bloodied and visibly distressed, prompting an immediate call to police.

Officers launched an investigation to locate Chadbourne, who later handed himself in at a local police station. He was initially released on conditional bail after being interviewed, as detectives gathered evidence.

However, while on bail, Chadbourne continued to contact the victim, making threats and attempting to pressure her into withdrawing the case. He also offered her money in exchange for dropping the charges. This led to his arrest for breaching bail conditions, after which he was remanded in custody.

Police Constable Andy Jones said:

“This was a cowardly and vicious attack carried out by an extremely violent man. I want to commend the victim’s bravery in reporting what happened and supporting our investigation despite Chadbourne’s best efforts to intimidate her into dropping the charges. It is testament to her character that she refused to allow him to control her and instead assisted us in bringing him to justice. Chadbourne is a nasty and manipulative individual who deserves every day of his five years and three months behind bars. Violence towards women and girls will never be tolerated, and just like in this case we will do everything in our power to put offenders before the courts.”
