Man jailed after sexually assaulting teenage girl at Cosham station
A man who targeted a teenage girl at Cosham railway station has been jailed for a year after admitting a sexual assault uncovered through a British Transport Police investigation.
Barnaby Money, 46, from East Hill Road in Ryde, appeared at Portsmouth Crown Court on 15 January, where he received a 12‑month custodial sentence. He had already entered a guilty plea to a charge of Sexual Assault. The court also imposed a decade-long requirement for him to remain on the sex offenders register and barred him from any work involving children.
The incident took place on 25 February 2025. The court was told that the 17‑year‑old victim had been waiting alone on platform two when Money approached and sat beside her. He initially asked questions about train services, despite the girl’s attempts to disengage. He then moved closer, asked her to accompany him on a walk, and made a request for a sexual act.
He attempted to kiss her hand before sexually assaulting her, remaining beside her even after the attack and threatening to rape her. A bystander who witnessed what was happening immediately contacted police.
Hampshire Police officers were first on the scene and, with the witness’s help, identified Money still sitting next to the girl. He was arrested on the spot and taken into custody. A detailed investigation by BTP detectives followed, ultimately leading to his guilty plea.
BTP Detective Constable Phil James said:
"Money is a dangerous sexual predator who preyed on a lone teenage girl and attacked her as she waited for a train. His behaviour was totally unacceptable and has caused a young woman severe trauma. I commend her bravery in supporting our investigation, as well as the bystander who quickly called the police so Money could be arrested at the scene. Thanks to them, Money is now behind bars and no longer a danger to women. If you experience or witness a sexual offence on-board a train or at a station, I urge you to report it to us by texting 61016. We take all reports seriously, and just like in this incident, officers will immediately attend to arrest sexual offenders and bring them to justice."
